Japan's Tax Exemption
To make the most of shopping in Japan, it is helpful to understand the country's tax-free system.
Please note that tax exemption is available only under certain conditions.
Details are available on the page below.
Tax-Free System Revisions in 2025 and 2026
As of April 1, 2025, tax-free shopping does not apply when items are sent overseas by the purchaser via international parcels. (Direct shipping arranged by the store may still be available.)
For purchases made on or after November 1, 2026, the revised system adopts a “refund method,” under which the consumption tax equivalent is refunded after Customs confirms at departure that the goods are being taken out of Japan.
